How to Convert an SVG to PNG
Last updated
SVG artwork is described with shapes and paths, so it can scale without becoming pixelated. PNG is a pixel image, which is accepted by more editors, upload forms and document tools. Converting SVG to PNG means choosing the final pixel size.
Steps
- Choose an SVG file in the SVG to PNG tool.
- Enter the output width and height in pixels. Use a larger size if the image will be displayed or printed large.
- Convert and download the PNG.
- Open it at its intended display size and check small text, fine strokes and transparency.
Choose output dimensions
An SVG can be rendered at many sizes, but the PNG has a fixed pixel width and height. If the PNG will be shown at 600 CSS pixels on a high-density screen, exporting around 1200 pixels wide can look sharper. Avoid choosing extremely large dimensions without a reason because they use more memory and storage.
If the SVG has a viewBox, the converter uses it to determine the artwork proportions. Use matching width and height proportions to avoid empty margins or clipping.
Keep a vector original
PNG conversion does not preserve editable vector paths. Keep the original SVG for future resizing or graphic edits. SVG Optimizer can remove redundant markup, but always preview optimized artwork because complex SVG features may be affected.
Common questions
Will the PNG stay sharp at every size?
No. It is rasterized at the dimensions you choose; enlarging it later can make it look soft.
Can PNG keep a transparent background?
Yes, if the source SVG is transparent and you export PNG.
Why might some SVG files fail?
Complex, malformed or active embedded content may not be supported by the browser converter.
