How to Convert CSV and Excel Files

Last updated

CSV is plain text arranged in rows and columns. XLSX is an Excel workbook that can also contain formulas, formatting and multiple sheets. Converting between them is useful when an application requires a particular format, but the two formats do not store the same information.

Steps

  1. Choose a CSV file to create an Excel workbook, or choose an XLSX file to export a worksheet as CSV.
  2. Select the matching conversion action in CSV and Excel Converter.
  3. Download the new file and open it in the application that will receive it.
  4. Check column alignment, date formats, special characters and leading zeros.

What happens to spreadsheet features

CSV contains table values only. It does not preserve cell colors, formulas, charts, multiple worksheets, merged cells or comments. The site's XLSX-to-CSV conversion exports the first worksheet, so check that it is the one you need.

A CSV file may not carry a clear instruction for whether commas, semicolons or tabs separate columns. If the columns appear in one cell, check the source's delimiter or import settings.

Protect identifiers and private data

Spreadsheet apps may remove leading zeros or reinterpret long numbers when opening CSV. Check identifiers such as postal codes, account references and product codes before relying on the converted workbook.

For sensitive data, inspect the destination file before sharing. The converter processes files locally in your browser and does not upload them to the site.

Common questions

Will CSV preserve formulas?

No. CSV stores displayed values as text and does not preserve workbook formulas or formatting.

Does XLSX to CSV export every worksheet?

This tool exports the first worksheet only. Save each needed sheet separately before conversion.
