JSON Formatter
Turn compact JSON into readable, indented text, minify it for compact storage, or check whether the input parses as valid JSON.
JSON is parsed and formatted in this browser. Input is not uploaded or saved.
🔒 All processing happens in your browser — files never leave your device. Your input stays in this browser and is not uploaded to Smart Online Tools.
How it works
- Paste JSON into the input box.
- Choose indentation and select Format, or select Minify.
- Copy the result or correct any reported syntax error.
Good to know: Formatting checks JSON syntax; it does not validate data against a particular schema. Input remains in your browser and is not saved.

Format or minify JSON
Pretty-printed JSON uses indentation and line breaks so nested objects and arrays are easier to inspect. Minified JSON removes extra whitespace while preserving parsed values, which can help when transferring compact data.
If formatting fails, check for single quotes, missing commas, trailing commas, comments, or unquoted property names. If valid JSON is rejected by an API, check that service's required fields and schema separately.
Frequently asked questions
Does JSON support comments?
Standard JSON does not. Remove comments before validating it.
Can a formatter repair invalid JSON automatically?
It can only format valid input. Fix syntax errors first, then format.
Is JSON the same as JavaScript object syntax?
No. JSON is stricter: keys and strings require double quotes, and executable expressions are not allowed.
Will CSV preserve formulas?
No. CSV stores displayed values as text and does not preserve workbook formulas or formatting.
Does XLSX to CSV export every worksheet?
This tool exports the first worksheet only. Save each needed sheet separately before conversion.
